Posting Photos Online Requires a Mad Scientist Flowchart | Lifestream Blog.

This article is a couple of months old now, but I just stumbled across it this week … as I struggle to figure out how to balance personal/professional online presence for myself and also figure out how to put up content for our Girl Scout site keeping it both secure and easily accessible to families, this chart really resonated with me!

Governor, Frist brace for poor TCAP showing, try to lower expectations | Nashville City Paper: Nashville’s Online Source for Daily News.

So, just so we’re clear … my child took a test, upon which her entire future is based (her scores this year, the first time she ever took the test, determine where she gets to go to middle school, which determines where she goes to high school, and so on), and no one knows how to score the damn thing?!! How do you make a test without developing the standards for it?!! So basically they’re meeting later this month to “decide” how to score the test … when they will have the results right in front of them!!!

Favorite quote … our illustrious State Education Commissioner Tim Webb on the new scores … “For the first time in many, many years, we in Tennessee are being honest, truly honest with our students and our families,” Webb added, stressing the scores don’t indicate a “loss in knowledge.”

So we’ve been lied to for years with the test scores, but THIS TIME, they’re going to tell us the truth. Only, they’re not sure what the truth is, or how to find it. Are you f%#@*^! kidding me?!! No, they’re not, that’s the problem.

Barely in time for Chanukah, but will arrive in plenty of time for those of you who celebrate XMas! %-)

Two versions … the collage went inside the handmade cards I made …

And this was the all-in-one that I sent to everyone else. No offense if you got this version … most people did! I only hand-make cards for family members … there are only so many hours in the day! I actually really like this one, and may do away with hand-made cards altogether next year.

Whatever you celebrate this time of year … Merry Everything!

Just got an email from Real Simple with the subject line :
spinach_couscous

I don’t know what kind of kids these people have, but spinach couscous would NOT be kid-friendly in my house!!! In fact, not even sure it would be grown-up friendly…

Maybe if I pureed it in the blender, added food coloring, and mixed it with a ginormous amount of sugar (for the kids) or meat (for Craig)? :-P

Watching (or at least listening to) kids’ movies is something I do WAY too much, thanks to having two little ones about, so this week’s topic is a very salient one for me. Some of the kids movies are much less painful to watch 20,000 times than others! :-P Here are my favorites:

1. The Lion King – possibly the best last scene in a movie ever (well, at least a kids’ movie), and just great throughout; the combination of story and music works well here in a way it doesn’t always.
2. Mary Poppins – I had never actually seen this until I had kids, now I LOVE it! What great parenting messages, and the interplay of color with the black & white is fascinating at multiple levels. Plus Dick Van Dyke steals the show as Bert.
3. The Incredibles – STRONG female characters, enough said; my kids and I have been waiting impatiently for a sequel on this one!
4. E.T. – my kids actually don’t like this one as much as some of the others, but it made a HUGE impact on me as a child, so gotta have it on the list.
5. Mulan – again, strong female characters, rare in a Disney film! Very engaging story, too, for both girls and boys.
6. Finding Nemo – phenomenal characters, and more good parenting messages
7. The Wizard of Oz – love this one as both a psychologist and a mom!
8. Transformers – okay, I know, this one is inexplicable, I just love this movie somehow…
9. Harry Potter – I know, they’re really books, and the books are MUCH, ***MUCH*** better than the movies. But, still, the movies don’t do a bad job of capturing the magical world – some of the visuals are stunning, and key plot elements are there. My kids still aren’t quite old enough to read the books, so the movies are a good stand-in until then. Order of these movies in terms of favorites so far – 1, 3, 4, 2, 5.
10. Shrek – great messages about inclusiveness and being true to yourself, and at least puts an interesting spin on the whole “rescue the princess” shtick.

Please note, even though I did love them as a child (and continue to as an adult), I don’t consider the Star Wars movies to be children’s movies (in the sense that I don’t think they were made FOR children). If they were children’s movies, they would definitely be at the very top of this list (in the order 5, 4, 6, 3, 1, 2). Other favs that almost made this list – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Monsters Inc.

This week’s topic is things I want to do in 2009. I like this better than the New Year’s Resolutions … ’cause they’re more specific, and they can just be for fun (which most of mine are).

1. Be a good coach – I got conned into coaching BOTH kids’ basketball teams this year! I have pretty low expectations performance-wise – only one kid on each team has ever played basketball before. My goal is to teach them to love the game, and hopefully make sure they know which goal is theirs! :-P In all seriousness, my kids have played enough sports that I’ve seen a lot of coaches – some great, some absolutely awful. Even if I can’t be great, I hope I always am able to find something positive to say to each kid after the game, and to make sure they have fun, regardless of outcome.

2. Cosmo challenge – this one is for Craig, he knows what it means! ;-)

3. Watch either Kentucky or Vanderbilt win the NCAA championship – based on pre-conference play, this one doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell, but you gotta dream! In the case of Kentucky, a follow-up to this one is that I’d like to watch a press conference where the UK athletics director fires Billy Gillespie.

4. Go on another sisters weekend with my sisters – girls, we’ve been talking about this for TWO YEARS, we gotta get our acts together and just do it!

5. Enjoy celebrating my 10th wedding anniversary

6. Join (or start) a book club – again, this is something I’ve talked to several people about, and just need to get my act together and do!

7. Be better about keeping the web page/blog updated – Facebook is great, and I have been doing more of that, but I know some of you want more details!

8. Go somewhere I’ve never been – that’s on my list every year!

9. Submit at least 5 papers for publication, and two grant proposals – need to kick my work up into a higher gear, and now’s the time.

10. Have a Passover seder or Rosh Hashanah dinner at my house – we have gotten out of the habit of entertaining, but I really like having people over, and holidays are an easy way to get back into that groove.

Will try to check back in over the course of the year to see how well I do!

Scholastic News has released the results of this year’s mock election … Obama wins!!! Their results have mirrored the actual election in all but two cases since they started this in 1940. Let’s hope it hold true this year as well!

Both my kids voted in the “election”, and they are very excited about the results. Their school has really gone all out on the election this year – they’re having representatives from both the McCain and Obama camps come and do a little mini-debate, and the whole school has been doing projects related to the election. I’m really impressed with how much they’ve learned, and how invested they seem in the outcome. They are still counting yard signs almost every day on the way to school, too – they call our neighborhood “McCainville” (there are more McCain signs than Obama signs), and the area nearer to their school they call “Obamaland”.

Okay, so head over to TeamKirith Tidbits (our home page). I bought a new template from 11 Mystics – love, love, LOVE their stuff! Also love the ease of getting advanced features all the while be clueless as to HOW they happened – compliments of iWeb. Made some quick pages for Samara and Eli, too. Will be updating mine/Craig’s work pages soon. Stay tuned!

Haha :-P

Craig turned 50 yesterday! The kids and I planned an adventure-filled day with him … 50 things to celebrate being 50. The day started with a special breakfast we made, but the breakfast was at 7:00, so we could make an 8am soccer game! The day improved dramatically after that!

I made a photo-blog of his day: http://www.teamkirith.net/TeamKirith_Tidbits/Craigs_50th_Birthday.html

By the way, to those of you who sent in your “Craig’s List”. Those were the highlight of his day!!! He got tears in his eyes when he read them.

Got this email from Samara’s teacher a few minutes ago – totally made my day!

Leslie,
I wanted to let you know that Samara participated two times today in different discussions! I was very proud of her and wish you could have seen her. I think her seeing us talk this morning really encouraged her to speak up! I just wanted to let you know so maybe it could brighten your afternoon! Have a wonderful evening!

Thanks for all your support, Lauren

We have come up with a new system to reward her for talking in class. Eli, we have to reward for things like not getting sent to the principal’s office. Samara, totally different beast. :-P
